Those using acoustic sounds from SD3 can use two instances to carry two layers of sounds, however we show how existing recordings can also get the treatment. ![]() In the video, we use Toontrack’s Superior Drummer 3 (SD3) to conjure some hybrid sounds that lean on the range and depth of classic machine sounds as well. These can include large components of simple waveshapes that can shake the room, or noise-like brightness that would have any drum mic EQ hitting the end-stops in no time. While these sounds can be genre-specific, machine drums possess qualities that are universally desirable. Hybrid SoundsĮlectronic drum sounds used to be the preserve of pioneering machines from the likes of Linn, Oberheim, and Roland, and the DAW revolution along with some excellent hardware recreations continue the tradition. Engineers can get creative with other techniques such as layering up with clean hits from the same kit, perhaps with increased room ambience or re-amping techniques employed. Upon this the producer can supercharge sounds with complimentary library samples to turn up the instruments’ size or impact. Some genres lean on augmented sounds with the original recording forming the foundation. Certainly throwing a 58 in the kick on those occasions can be a good insurance policy. For some sessions, such as demos or pre-production recordings, it can also elevate placeholder sounds that end up on the finished record. It is also highly effective for disaster management for when that lead or mic dies mid-flight (never when in the cupboard or drawer of course…). Going Deeper Replace, Augment, Or Transform?ĭrum replacement has applications beyond making a good drum recording sound great. ![]() ![]() Using an integrated solution with well curated sounds is the engineer’s friend when time is money. ![]() While drum replacement and layering is nothing new, getting hybrid sounds can involve multiple sound sources and tools for generating the MIDI. With dozens of classic machines to play with, we create some hybrid sounds to make drums pop. Drum sample replacement or augmentation can be a life saver for purely acoustic sounds, but some genres need more.
